Drill: 3 charges and a loose ball

    Youth Basketball Drills
Purpose: To drill defensive positioning, taking a charge, and defensive hustle by diving on a loose ball

    Organization:

    • 3 players stand around the perimeter (top of key and either wing) – each has a ball.
    • The defensive hustle player stands in the middle of the key without a ball
    • A coach stands out of bounds near the short corner area with a ball

    Procedure:

    • 2 drives to the basket and X1 establishes position and takes the charge
    • X1 immediately gets up and takes a charge on 1 driving to the basket from the top of the key
    • X1 immediately gets up and takes a charge from 3 driving from the opposite wing
    • As x1 gets up the third time, the coach rolls a ball toward mid-court.  X1 dives on the ball to complete the drill

    Coaching Points:

    • x1 must establish position outside of the lane when 2 and/or 3 drive.
    • X1 must establish position near the broken semicircle line when 1 drives
    • Every player goes through one circuit, focusing primarily on making great hustle plays

    Youth Basketball Drill:
    monkey in the middle

    Youth Basketball Drills
Purpose: To drill mirroring the ball
    defensively, looking for pass deflections

    Organization:
Players organize into groups of three, with two offensive
    players facing
each other, approximately 15 feet apart. The defensive
    player stands between the
offensive players. One offensive player has a ball.

    Procedure:

    1. Offensive players pass the ball back and forth
to one another while the defensive
players attempt to deflect all passes. Offensive players
    should "fake a pass to
make a pass", performing ball fakes in one
direction and passing in the other
    direction. Players should fake low
as if to complete a pass off of the defender’s
    hip, and pass high
completing a pass off of the defender’s ear. Alternatively,
    players
should fake high as if to pass off of their defenders either, and pass
    low,
sending a pass off of the defender’s hip.
    2. Defensive
players follow every pass, closing out on the offensive player with the
ball. Defensive players respond to every ball fake by aggressively
    mirroring the
ball with both hands (As the ball goes high, the
defenders hands follow as if they
were a mirror in front of the
    ball).
    3. Defenders remain "in the middle" until they deflect a pass.
    A deflection is
defined as a player getting his hands on any part of
    the basketball. When this
occurs, the offensive player who threw the
    pass switches positions with the
    defensive player, and the drill
    continues.

    Coaching Points:
    1. Offensive
players are not allowed to make any lob passes. All passes must be
    either direct passes or
    bounce passes.
    2. Offensive players should attempt to reach past the
body or head of the defensive
player when releasing the pass. This
insures that the defense will not get a
    deflection. By "faking a pass
to make a pass" the offense is simulating
    completing a pass to the
    post.
    3. Defensive players should aggressively mirror the ball with
    both hands and look
for pass deflections. The pass deflections do not
    always lead to turnovers, they
can still be quite valuable in
disrupting the opponent’s confidence in running its
    patterns fluidly.
For pressure defensive teams, pass deflections are an excellent
indication of aggressiveness. This type of aggressiveness can erode an
    offense‟s
confidence over the course of the game.
